HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE WORKPLACE

Are you ready to launch your career but unsure where to start? In this resource, we’ll guide you through essential steps to prepare for the workforce. From perfecting your CV to nailing your first day, we've got you covered.

Before receiving a job offer, it's important to consolidate your skills. Hard skills are specific to your job role and can be developed through your course, work experience, or volunteering. Soft skills like resilience, attitude, and flexibility relate to how you work and interact with others; however, they can be harder to identify and demonstrate.

Consider completing a skills assessment to help you recognise and discuss your skills. This will allow you to develop specific examples of when you've demonstrated them that can be used during job interviews.

Researching a company before an interview is crucial for making informed decisions and improving your chances of getting hired. Make sure to tailor your CV and cover letter to the company's specific needs, such as relevant skills, experiences, and values.

Similarly, ensure you know and understand the values, beliefs, and people integral to the company. This will help you align your application with the company's culture and demonstrate that you are a good fit. More importantly, helps you decide whether this is a company you are happy with and willing to contribute to.

Let’s say you’ve secured your dream role. Great! But now what? Before your first day of work, there are numerous preparatory steps to take to minimise your experiences of stress and uncertainty. First, check if you have the appropriate work attire. Clarifying the dress code with a superior can guarantee you don’t attract negative attention on your first day.

Similarly, ask questions that will be useful to know. For example, determining who your person of contact is, their preferred communication method, and what a typical day looks like can prevent mishaps from becoming detrimental issues.

Now, you’ve made it to your first day of work! But preparations aren’t over yet. To make a good first impression, continue using formal verbal and written language until you can gauge how casually the company operates.

During task briefings, you should make notes and ask questions about deadlines and formats. This will help you produce exceptional results and demonstrate to your colleagues you are eager to impress and contribute.

Several key steps are important to prepare for the workforce. Being well-prepared during the job search process, before starting the job, and while on the job can help reduce stress and set you up for a successful and fulfilling career.
